"April Memories" 14x11 Oil on Masonite
I was very excited to be asked to participate in this group themed show "Palimpsest" by Oxford Gallery Director and owner, Mr. James Hall. To be honest, I did not know what the term Palimpsest meant but once explained to me and with some of my own research I was instantly inspired to create this Trompe L'Oeil piece.
A Palimpsest is an image and where a presumably earlier image shows through. It is an image that contains evidence of it's own personal history. I love that last line, It's own personal history and I wanted to relate that in not only the layers chalk writing that were there, wiped away, written again but also in my own personal history and memory.
Since this show is a spring event I knew I wanted to make use of the new season to represent something which was older and had been around for a while and with a symbol of spring, the Iris. As a child I remember my father each spring saying the rhyme "spring has sprung, the grass has riz, I wonder where the birdies is?" Fragments of this are found in the writing, layered and lost into the chalk, much the same way those early years come back in small pieces but never in it's entirety.
